Szekszardi Barbar Cuvee 2006 Price/bottle: £36.40
Szekszardi Barbar Cuvee 2006
According to the Heimanns the meaning of barbar is 'something different, unusual' and this wine is unusually different. Maybe the reason is the Basque tannat grape; its famous, impressive style was tamed to exciting refinement on the loess field in Szekszárd. The merlot gave roundness, the franc added spices and the kékfrankos gave playfulness to this wine; in its rustic aroma there are exotic spices and currant, tasting it there is excellent balance, perfect complexity, and deep aromas.

Pannonhalmi Tricollis Cuvee Red 2007 Price/bottle: £12.70
Pannonhalmi Tricollis Cuvee Red 2007
Just like the white one, Tricollis red incorporates three different grape varieties from our three different vineyards Széldomb, Tavaszó and Babszökõ: Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
Harvest time of the ripe grapes is accorded to the specific requirements of each variety. The wine is fermented in stainless steel, keeping the juice on the skin for three weeks. Following pressing, malo-lactic fermentation and ageing for 8-11 months after that take place in seconly-used barriques.
During this period, the wine becomes a ruby-coloured mellow red one, where Pinot Noir and Merlot are dominant, completed gently with Cabernet Franc.

Notes of cherry and red-currant in the fragrance are enriched by the fine cinnamon spices due to the ageing in small barrels.
Soft tannins make the blend medium-bodied, keeping it easy-drinking.This kind of red wine is a cheerful complementer to grilled dishes, ragout and cheese, recommended to be consumed chilled to a temperature of 16 to 18°C.

Villanyi Cuvee 13 2008 Price/bottle: £14.95
Villanyi Cuvee 13 2008
13 may be an unlucky number for some but not for those who try this juicy, fruit-bomb, bargain of a wine from the excellent vintage of 2008. Syrah makes up more than half of the blend and brings a fantastic floral fragrance, especially of violets, and a spicy kick to contrast with the abundant and ripe blackcurrant of the Cabernet Sauvignon (29%) and red fruit of the Cabernet Franc (15%). This fresh wine was 85% aged and fermented in stainless steel tanks, with 15% going into new French oak barrels for 2 months to add a welcome bit of depth. The fermentation with indigenous yeast really lets the grapes do the talking.
